Wolff was “overwhelmed” by Antonelli, Hamilton and Bono on the podium

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says seeing Kimi Antonelli, Lewis Hamilton and race engineer Peter Bonnington – Bono on the Chinese Grand Prix podium is “probably one of the best moments I have ever had”.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff had a lot to be happy about at the Chinese Grand Prix. Not only did his team score another 1-2 victory, with Kimi Antonelli clinching his first career win, but the podium was completed by Mercedes’ long-time driver, and Toto’s personal friend – Lewis Hamilton!

What made this even more special, is the fact that Antonelli’s current, and Lewis Hamilton’s former race engineer Peter Bonnington – Bono, was on the podium to pick up the Constructors’ trophy for Mercedes.

After the ceremony, Wolff said this was probably one of the greatest moments he ever had in his long F1 career.

“It has been a while since I have been in Formula 1, but that podium now is probably one of the best moments I have ever had,” the Austrian said.

“The three of them with Bono right in the middle, who has been with Lewis forever and has taken over Kimi, and made him into what he is today…

“To be honest, it’s rare that I’m overwhelmed, but that’s such a moment.”

Regarding Kimi’s first win, Toto said:

“I think it’s maybe come earlier than I thought. Last year we said that it’s going to be a very difficult year with many ups and downs and mistakes.

“Then, bang, second race [of his second season he wins]. He has controlled it in the front, he has driven very well today, so he’s probably a little bit better than the trajectory I thought.

“He was actually quite calm and jovial before the race but then, on the grid, you see the eyes,” Wolff concluded.
