George Russell: “I was very pushy with Mercedes”

George Russell says being “very pushy” has opened up many doors for him in his career, and after the Sakhir Grand Prix, he is now in a “very comfortable position”.

The Briton got his foot in the door with Mercedes when he called team boss Toto Wolff to convince him to be a part of Mercedes’ young drivers programme. Needless to say, he succeeded and, finally, in 2020 he got the opportunity to step into Lewis Hamilton’s vacant spot at the Sakhir Grand Prix, and impress everyone with his performance.

Now, after almost winning his first race in a Mercedes, he believes he is in a “very comfortable position” when it comes to his future.

“I think, you know, up to this point in my career, I’ve always been very, very pushy,” Russell told Sky Sports F1.

“I was very pushy with Mercedes in the first place to get the opportunity to race in GP3 – from there to get myself into Formula 1.

“But I think I had such a unique opportunity last year in Bahrain, that I’m in a very comfortable position, I think that race was massive for myself.

“I think it gives me the opportunity now to sit back, relax, and just really focus on the driving – what will happen will happen.

“And I’d like to think I managed to show what I could do in a front running car. And you know, Mercedes are my mentors, my managers.

“We just have to wait and see what comes in 2022,” concluded the Briton.

Russell’s original three-year contract with Williams runs out at the end of 2021 and he is considered to be a strong contender for a seat at Mercedes.
