Lewis Hamilton had an endearing exchange with his race engineer Peter Bonnington ‘Bono’ after his amazing win at the Bahrain Grand Prix.

It’s always nice to hear radio banter between Lewis Hamilton and his race engineer Peter Bonnington ‘Bono’, but especially after such an amazing victory. After Lewis managed to hold off Max Verstappen to win the Bahrain Grand Prix on much older tyres, Bonnington was ecstatic.

“Get in there Lewis,” said Bono over the team radio.

“What a job mate, what a race! Amazing!”

Afterwards, a jubilant Lewis thanked the team working in Mercedes’ factories in Brackley and Brixworth.

“Amazing job,” Lewis exclaimed.

“I’m so grateful to everyone back at the factory, everyone working so hard. I know we were not quick enough, but we managed to do it.

“That’s teamwork.”

Then Lewis endearingly told his engineer: “Still got it, Bono”, to which Bonnington replied: “Yeah, not bad for an old man”.

At one point during the race, Lewis told Bono to stop giving him information updates, while Max Verstappen was fast approaching behind him, so that he can focus on driving. After the race he explained the message.

“Bono kept telling me how many laps were left. He was like three laps, two laps, and I was like, Bono I can count, I have got it.

“He was just nervous, but I’m grateful for Bono and his patience with me,” concluded Lewis.
