Toto Wolff says that Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes lead the championship “because there is a god of racing that gives and takes away”.
Ahead of the British Grand Prix Mercedes has been behind Red Bull in the championship standings by 44 points, while Hamilton was behind Verstappen by 32.
Two races later Hamilton and Mercedes both lead the championship. However, Wolff shoots down any claims that Mercedes was disproportionately lucky.
“We are leading the championship because there is a god of racing that gives and takes away,“ the Austrian told La Gazzetta dello Sport
“In Monaco we could have been second with Bottas if we hadn’t had problems with the pit stop, and in Baku we could have won with Hamilton.
“On the other hand, our rivals had a lot of bad luck in Hungary.”

Asked about the collision at the British Grand Prix that put Max out of the race, Wolff was very clear: “What happened in Silverstone was not Hamilton’s fault”.
Some might also point to Max Verstappen suffering a tyre puncture in Baku as a sign of bad luck, but Wolff again implies this might have happened because Red Bull was “playing” with tyre pressure.
“Sometimes teams are on the limit of what is allowed, or even a bit too far over it for my liking.
“It’s good that the FIA keeps a close eye on the teams, and it’s my job and that of my engineers to be suspicious.
“I am sure that some teams have played with the tyre pressures or the flexibility of the wings, and the FIA was right to intervene,” concluded Wolff.
