La Gazzetta dello Sport asked Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff if he thinks Lewis Hamilton can win ten Formula 1 championship titles.
Lewis Hamilton currently sits at the top of the 2021 championship standings, eight points ahead of Max Verstappen. Having already won seven world titles, La Gazzetta dello Sport asked Toto Wolff if he believes Lewis could ultimately become champion ten times?
“First you have to win the eighth and ninth,” the Austrian said.
“That is not a given. Now we have to focus on the second half of the season and beat Red Bull.”
Judging by Mercedes’ recent performances, he might have a good chance! There’s no doubt that Mercedes has been behind Red Bull in terms of performance in the first half of the 2021 season, however Toto Wolff now says Mercedes is not inferior anymore.
“At the moment we are not inferior to Red Bull, whereas at the beginning of this season we clearly were.”

Wolff also thinks Honda’s amazing engine has been a bit factor in Red Bull’s recent resurgence.
“For me it was clear that Honda would be strong this year: they want to leave F1 with a world championship in their pocket.
“I have respect for the Japanese. They have climbed Mount Everest since they returned to F1 in 2015. If I wasn’t running Mercedes, I would wish them success.”
However, Red Bull is going to be getting an engine penalty in one of the coming races, due to having to take on a new power unit, because the old one was wrecked in Verstappen’s Silverstone crash. Wolff doesn’t think it will be a problem for the Austrian team.
“They have such a strong package that even if they had to start from the pit lane, with the right strategy they would finish in the top three,” concluded Wolff.
