Williams team boss Jost Capito says George Russell’s result at the Belgian Grand Prix Qualifying “puts him even more to Mercedes”, while the young Briton plans to “go for it” in the race.
George Russell amazed everyone with his performance at the Belgian Grand Prix Qualifying, where he put his car on the front row.
Jost Capito thinks his driver is Mercedes bound, and feels happy for him.
“We would love to keep him, of course, but I think with this result today, if Toto hasn’t got the decision done yet, I think this puts him even more to Mercedes,” Capito told Sky Sports F1.
“We, especially me, I am very happy to see him in a Mercedes. The talent is so great for his age. He deserves to be in a car that is capable of winning the championship and we fully support him in that.”
Wolff revealed today that a decision on Mercedes’ 2022 driver line-up has indeed been made, but he did not reveal who Mercedes has chosen between Russell and Valtteri Bottas.
Going into the race from P2 is a new experience for Williams in the last couple of years, so the team still doesn’t have a plan of attack.
“We don’t know yet,” Capito continued.
“We will analyse the weather situation and then just go for it. It is too early to say because we never plan the strategy based on the qualifying result.

“So now we have got some time to discuss that and find a good solution. I said before it is better to smile in the rain than to cry in the sunshine.”
After qualifying George also said his plan in the race was to “go for it”.
“I think I was in a fortunate position that we had nothing to lose,” said Russell.
“You know, we were in Q3 which was not a norm for us and we had to go for it. We saved a full maximum engine mode for the last lap, and we thought: ‘You know what? Let’s go for it’.
“Buzzing. Absolutely buzzing. Obviously, tomorrow’s the important one. Got to go out there and score some more points.”
Asked if he plans to challenge for the lead, the young Briton said:
“That’s the plan, that’s the plan. If it’s there for the taking. “We’ll go for it!”
