German publication Auto Motor und Sport insists they did speak to Christian Horner and he did say Mercedes’ car was “not legal”. He denies it.

It seems Mercedes’ revolutionary W13 upgrade quickly created some controversy, helped in large part by Red Bull team boss Christian Horner.

First Auto Motor und Sport reported Horner’s alleged statement that Red Bull considers Mercedes’ car to be “not legal”, saying it “violates the spirit of the regulations”.

Then Red Bull came out with a denial, saying that Horner did not speak to anyone about Mercedes’ new car.

Now Sky Sports F1 reports that Auto Motor und Sport are “adamant that they did speak to Horner in the paddock today – despite Red Bull’s denial – and that he did say that parts of the Mercedes were ‘not legal’”.

However, Sky F1 also talked to Horner, who denies that it ever happened.

But Horner insists that didn’t happen.

“I was slightly surprised to be reading comments I’m supposed to have been making, but there we go,” Horner said.

“I haven’t paid a great deal of attention to [Mercedes]. It’s obviously a fairly different concept, but that’s for the designer guys and aerodynamicists to get into.”

When asked if Red Bull could lodge a protest, he said: “Let the guys digest it and understand it”.
