Valtteri Bottas reveals the final lap of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix cost him money, but Mercedes ‘made good’ by giving him the car he won his first F1 race with.

In an interview with Finnish journalist and presenter Oksari Saari Valtteri Bottas revealed he missed out on a bonus when Lewis Hamilton lost the 2021 title.

“It was quite a final lap,” Valtteri said when jokingly asked about ‘losing money’ due to the controversial finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

“Certain bonuses are tied to certain achievements. Luckily, I hadn’t gotten anything in advance. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t.”

However, Bottas says he has made enough money in Formula 1, so the lost bonus was nothing to worry about.

“I don’t really measure it like that, but at some point a moment came when there was no need to look at the bank balance anymore.

“Money is of course a big thing in Formula 1, but I remember where I come from and I have done quite well because of that.”

The Finn then revealed that, as a parting gift, Mercedes gave him his 2017 Mercedes W08, a car that he drove to his first race win.

“It was a big surprise and a nice gift. Unfortunately I have nowhere to put it,” he joked.
