Fernando Alonso says “it’s never the same when you fight against Lewis, one of the legends of our sport, and you know he can do something unexpected and use his talent”.
At the Bahrain Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton and his old McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso were involved in a short battle for P5.
Alonso ultimately passed the Briton, and then later Carlos Sainz, to finish the race in P3 (after Charles Leclerc retired).
After the race Alonso gave his thoughts on the battle.
“I had momentum on the exit,” the Spaniard said.
“I committed. Luckily Lewis didn’t close the door otherwise I would have hit his rear wing.
“You either do it like Lewis, and don’t close the door, or like Carlos Sainz – you close the door, then you are weak on the exit.”

Alonso also praised Lewis, while explaining how he made the overtake stick.
“It was great, a lot of respect between us,” he said.
“It’s never the same when you fight against Lewis, one of the legends of our sport, and you know he can do something unexpected and use his talent.
“He got me in Turn 4, I was in front of him but he managed to pass me there. That was a little bit of a surprise and I didn’t like it, so I tried in another place and it worked.
“And I had more pace so I could pull away,” concluded Alonso.
