Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko says Lewis Hamilton’s team did contact Red Bull to inquire about a possible seat, and that it was “someone from Lewis’ circle”.

Ahead of the 2023 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Christian Horner said that earlier this year Lewis Hamilton inquired about a possible seat with Red Bull.

Lewis has since completely denied the story, and said Horner was the one to reach out to him via text message.

However, Red Bull’s advisor Dr Helmut Marko insists that Hamilton’s team did make first contact.

“Yes,” he said when asked by OE24 if the contact did happen.

“But Verstappen and Hamilton in one team, that doesn’t work. With Max, what happened in 2021 is too deep-rooted.”

Marko also talked about the situation to Sky Germany.

“Christian Horner informed me that someone from Hamilton’s circle contacted him, asking if there was a possibility for Hamilton to drive for us.

“I said that the atmosphere is still charged thanks to the events of 2021 and it’s probably not going to work out due to emotional differences.

“Financially, we also can’t afford the most expensive driver on the grid. However, the main point was the relationship between Max and Lewis.”

When asked who made the contact, Marko replied: “Someone from Lewis’ circle.”
