Michael Masi was in the Formula 1 paddock during the Australian Grand Prix weekend, where he said he was open to talks with Mercedes regarding the finish of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
After the controversial decisions Michael Masi made at the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which denied Lewis Hamilton an almost certain eighth championship title win, the FIA removed the Australian from his role of race director.
Not only that, but the FIA’s official investigation into the matter has determined that Masi had made a “human error”, and this “error” basically handed Max Verstappen the 2021 title on a silver platter. Since then, the Australian has not been seen in the Formula 1 paddock.
However, during the Australian Grand Prix weekend, Masi was back in the paddock in his new role as the Independent Chair of the Supercars Commission, since Supercars were one of the support races over the race weekend.
When Hamilton was asked if he plans on speaking to the Australian to ask for clarification over what had happened in Abu Dhabi, he said: “There is nothing to say.”

Masi was also asked if he will approach Mercedes to discuss what had happened, and while the Australian said he will not initiate it, he did say he was open to talks.
“No, the choice is theirs,” Masi told News Corp media.
“I’ve always had an open door policy and will always have an open door policy, since the moment that I arrived in this F1 paddock and that continues,” he concluded.
However, when Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff was asked if he would meet Masi, he shut that option down immediately.
“No,” he said.
“It is something from the past, a very unpleasant period,” Wolff concluded.
