In Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying SQ3, Lando Norris’ P1 lap was deleted for exceeding track limits and it seemed Lewis Hamilton would take pole. However, the lap was soon reinstated.

In Japanese Grand Prix Sprint Qualifying SQ3, Lewis Hamilton was on his way to taking pole when Lando Norris put in a superb lap to take P1.

His time was however immediately deleted for exceeding track limits on the final turn of his previous lap, which put Lewis back in contention for pole.

Most believe this was done because the stewards believed that Lando’s track limits breach on the previous lap, has helped his next flying lap.

However, the decision was soon reversed, so Lando ultimately finished the session in P1 and Lewis i P2.

Afterwards, Mercedes’ team boss Toto Wolff was asked to comment on this decision.

“I haven’t seen the data, I’ve just seen he [Lando Norris] had four tyres off track,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.

“But honestly, that [lap] was even slower, so he probably could have gone faster, so I’m okay with that,” Wolff concluded.
