Wolff and Hamilton comment on Verstappen’s “defending”

While Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes Max Verstappen should have gotten a time penalty, Lewis Hamilton says “It doesn’t really matter, as I got the result I needed”.

When Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen went wheel to wheel at Turn 4 on Lap 48 of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the Dutch driver obviously intentionally pushed Lewis wide and off the track.

Although the incident was being looked at by the stewards, they later decided that no action was necessary. Toto Wolff does not agree.

“We started the weekend on the back foot with our self-inflicted engine penalty,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.

“Then we got disqualified yesterday, which was harsh and then today, in the race, things went against us too. Max was right on the limit”

“Brilliant racing, hard defending just to the limit. Lewis was clever, super clever, avoiding the contact. So, it was great to see these two super drivers.

“But not giving it five seconds [penalty] or so? Come on! I’d like to see the onboard of Max actually.

“It’s pretty spectacular how he does it, but I think Lewis cruising around him to avoid the contact was even better,” concluded Wolff.

Lewis however, said he knew immediately that the stewards would let Verstappen off the hook.

“When they said they were going to investigate, I just knew the decision they were going to come to, whether it was right or wrong,” the Briton told Sky Sports F1.

“I didn’t let it faze me, I just kept racing. I got the result I needed”

Asked if he thinks the stewards made the wrong decision, Lewis said it didn’t matter as he managed to beat Max on the track.

“I’m not gonna go into that. I need to look back at it, but I mean, it’s a racing incident at the end of the day, probably.

“It doesn’t really matter, as I got the result I needed,” concluded the seven-time champion.
