Lewis Hamilton’s assistant and physiotherapist Angela Cullen says she sees her role “as removing the noise of the race weekend”.
Each race weekend Formula 1 fans can see Angela Cullen next to Lewis Hamilton at all times, when he is not in his car. The New Zealander explains her role when the drivers are lining up on the grid.
“The grid is my most focused part of the weekend the energy and tension is so high,” Cullen wrote on Instagram.
“Our team’s routines are perfected over the years to ensure a smooth transition. As the car arrives at the back of the grid the mechanics push the car to the start position as the driver is communicating with the team how the car felt on the laps to the grid.
“Where possible our team always does the maximum laps to the grid to obtain maximum feedback as to how the car is feeling with the track conditions, as there is still opportunities to make final tweaks on set up.
“Once in position the driver will get out of the car, physio/trainer on hand to help taking off helmet, radio, HANS and balaclava.
“Every driver on the grid has a physio/trainer position like the one I do with Lewis, each role varies differently depending on the skill set of the PC and requirements of the driver.

“We all are there to assist our drivers best we can over the race weekend.
Angela then described her role over a race weekend, as she sees it.
“I see my role as removing the noise of the race weekend to ensure things run as smoothly as possible, managing schedules, and timings of travel, nutrition, focusing on energy management to ensure the driver arrives on Sunday with the best possible perpetration to give the optimal performance.
“I know anyone who knows me will laugh at my comment of removing noise as I am actually personally a very noisy person lol,” Cullen concluded.
