Toto Wolff says it’s not true that Mercedes demanded that the FIA remove Michael Masi, and adds he doesn’t know “where that came from”.
After the FIA removed Michael Masi from the position of race director, some have speculated that this was demanded by Mercedes as a condition for them to drop their appeal, following the controversial finish of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
These accusations are mostly coming from Red Bull, who have been defending Masi ever since he made his controversial decisions, which allowed Max Verstappen to become the 2021 champion.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff once again vehemently denies that any such deal was made.

“Us dropping the appeal linked to anyone leaving the FIA is not true,” the Austrian said.
“I don’t know where that came from. The restructuring with how decisions are being made in Formula 1, sporting decisions and also technical decisions, was necessary.
“Last year was a great season but it created a lot of polarisation with decisions that were not easy to understand,” concluded Wolff.
