Mercedes Technical Director James Allison discusses what makes the Red Bull RB19 such a good car, and adds he sees “no reason why we shouldn’t move in that direction”.

After completely dominating the 2022 season, Red Bull has been even more dominant in 2023.

There are a lot of theories on what makes the Red Bull RB19 such a fast car, and one of those says that the Austrian team is able to run their car closer to the ground that others, without encountering bouncing.

Mercedes’ James Allison doesn’t think that’s the case.

“I think it’s too simplistic and doesn’t do justice to the quality that’s in this car,” the Briton told Auto Motor und Sport.

“I don’t think Red Bull is going much lower than the rest of the field. I also don’t think they are less affected by bouncing than others.”

“They have a very efficient car that generates a lot of downforce with a low rear wing setting. And they have cornering behaviour that gives the drivers more confidence than we have.

“I see no reason why we shouldn’t move in that direction.”

When Allison was told that the Red Bull seems to produce more sparks going down the straights than other cars, he said that’s not the case anymore.

“We saw that mainly at the beginning of the season, where on certain tracks they hit the straights much earlier than other cars.

“At the moment we don’t observe that anymore,” Allison concluded.
