Toto Wolff thought Silverstone was Mercedes’ “best shot” to get a good result, but “maybe there’s another track where we have the best shot, because the characteristics of the car have changed”.
Mercedes has historically performed well at Silverstone. Even last year’s difficult car had one of its best performances at the 2022 British Grand Prix.
This year, however, Mercedes was unable to get the results the team wanted, especially in qualifying.
Team boss Toto Wolff thinks it might have to do with the changed characteristics of the car, after the team introduced two big upgrades.
“I thought at Silverstone, based on our historic performance, was the best shot but it wasn’t,” the Austrian said after the race.
“So maybe there’s another track where we have the best shot, because the characteristics of the car have changed.

“I always believe that we can beat Max with a good group of people, best drivers, we just have to give them a car that is more predictable and not the ‘Diva 2.0’, and much more complicated than the first one.”
Toto adds the car “remains a handful” despite recent upgrades.
“I think overall the car was not where we’ve seen it in Silverstone the last years. That was the track that we were really dominant and strong.
“And the high speed was not good at all compared to our direct competitors and qualifying we were struggling also on traction on the exits,” Wolff concluded.
