During the Belgian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen and his race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase could be heard exchanging some ‘heated’ messages over the team radio.
Lambiase even told Verstappen on several occasions that he should ‘use his head’, while Max said he could instead increase the gap to drivers behind him to allow for another pit stop, so he can give Red Bull’s mechanics some “practice”.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says Verstappen’s performance allows him to be “cheeky”.
“He has all the reasons to be cheeky,” the Austrian said.

“He is driving circles around everybody else on merit. You have got to watch that, on the one hand, as much as it is annoying.”
Wolff added that although Mercedes could not attack Red Bull, the team’s performance was an improvement over last year.
“When you compare to the rest of the world, Spa was an awful race and before the last stop, Perez, Leclerc and us were within six seconds.
“That was a major step for us because Spa was a disaster last year. We feel we have made that step but then you have the top guy who has also made a step – fact.
“We just need to turn around the fact,” Wolff concluded.
