Italian branch of Motorsport.com reports that Mercedes’ Technical Director James Allison completely changed the team’s 2024 car design. The new car will reportedly have no aerodynamic links to their cars from 2022 and 2023.

The Italian branch of Motorsport.com reports that Mercedes’ Technical Director James Allison has completely changed the design of the team’s 2024 challenger.

According to their report, the W15 will have no aerodynamic design links to the team’s 2022 and 2023 cars.

“James Allison, Brackley’s technical director, threw Mike Elliott’s concepts in the bin,” wrote Motorsport’s Franco Nugnes.

Nugnes is referencing Mercedes’ 2022 car design, which was retained in 2023, but has ultimately proven not to be the right design path for the team.

It has to be noted, though, that Mercedes’ former Technical Director Mike Elliott, who left the team June of 2023, is most definitely not solely responsible for the car’s design direction.

Nevertheless, Motorsport reports that the design has been completely changed for 2024, and will incorporate Lewis Hamilton’s requests, such as the cockpit position being pushed further back.

Furthermore, Nugnes reports that the car’s gearbox is set to be smaller and lighter, the car’s bottom will not be as long as it was last year, and the rear end will be more “compact”, which should limit the onset of porpoising.

This information should be taken with a grain of salt, but team boss Toto Wolff has said on several occasions that the 2024 car will be completely different from its previous iterations.

As of right now, Mercedes is yet to announce when the new car will be launched.
