Christian Horner says Lewis Hamilton “handled himself with dignity and respect” after the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
At the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Max Verstappen managed to beat Lewis Hamilton for the world championship under controversial circumstances, after race director Michael Masi ignored and altered the rules which govern the use of the Safety Car.
The intervention allowed Verstappen to overtake Hamilton on the last lap of the race, making for a nail-biting finish to an exciting season.
In reality, Lewis had no chance against Verstappen, since the race director’s intervention allowed the Dutch driver to have fresh Soft tyres, while Hamilton was on worn down Hards.
After the race, in spite of the shock he undoubtedly felt, Lewis proceeded to show what a sportsman he is by congratulating Max Verstappen, his father Jos, and Red Bull’s team boss Christian Horner.

Now, in a talk with Sky Sports, Horner strongly praised the seven-time champion for his post-race conduct.
“I felt the way that Lewis handled that disappointment after the race,” Horner said.
“Hats off to him, because he would have been even more disappointed. Record-breaking World Championship has just disappeared but he handled himself with dignity and respect.
“I shook his hand in the driver’s room after the race, and he had the good grace to say well done,” the Briton concluded.
