Wolff says Hamilton’s next contract will be at least a two-year deal

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says he doesn’t “want to be in a stressful situation every single year” regarding Lewis Hamilton’s contract.

In 2021 Lewis Hamilton has signed a one-year contract with Mercedes, but it seems almost certain that the Briton will extend his stay in Formula 1 into 2022 and beyond.

Toto Wolff has already stated he sees no reason for Hamilton to leave Mercedes, while after the Spanish Grand Prix Lewis indicated he wants the new deal signed before the summer break.

Wolff was asked if Hamilton’s next contract will again be a one-year deal or will it be a longer-term contract.

“Yes, it should be [more than a year],” the Austrian told PA.

“We don’t want to be in a stressful situation every single year where we are absolutely flat-out trying to win races and needing to negotiate. I would rather that doesn’t happen every year.

“We just need to spend a day or two together, put it out there, and decide which are the difficult components.

“We will then lock the door and won’t walk out until it is sorted. That works best for us and it has worked best for us in the past.”

The 36-year-old Hamilton has indicated on numerous occasions that he doesn’t intend to retire any time soon. Now Wolff confirms he can see the seven-time champion competing into his 40s.

“Yes, absolutely. I have no doubt about that. He is so disciplined that in a way it is inspiring.

“As long as Lewis continues to look after himself mentally and physically, continues to develop cognitively, then he can go on for much longer.

“Look at Tom Brady and we are talking about an athlete that is on the field.

“Here is a racing driver that has utilised all his senses,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
