McLaren CEO Zak Brown explains why he held talks with Max Verstappen’s manager regarding the Dutch driver’s possible switch to McLaren.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown recently revealed to De Telegraaf that he has held talks with Max Verstappen’s manager over the winter break.

“Oh yes, about that call… It is my job to explore the market and to know what is going on,” he said.

“We have to remember that at that time I was also negotiating a new contract with my own driver [Oscar Piastri].”

The talks ended when Brown learned the Dutch driver’s price tag. He explained it is his duty as team boss to explore the market, although now he is happy with his current driver line-up.

“I want to be able to estimate whether a possible stone may fall, which can cause a domino effect. Because that could rekindle interest in my driver. That’s the reason I inquired.

“I’m [now] a happy camper,” he concluded.
