Toto Wolff says he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Adrian Newey joining Mercedes, and adds if Christian Horner stays at Red Bull “there are exciting scenarios”.
An internal ‘civil war’ appears to be brewing inside Red Bull, between those close to team boss Christian Horner, and those close to the team’s advisor Dr Helmut Marko.
Max Verstappen has since said that if Marko leaves the team, he would follow, so many are assuming that if this was to happen, both could find their way to Mercedes.
Asked if Marko could indeed be the factor that brings Max to his team, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said:
“It’s all about Max and his perspectives. To be able to judge how important Marko really is for Max, I don’t know enough about the dynamic between the two.”
However, the most important factor at Red Bull might be Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey, the person who is primarily responsible for designing the team’s last three all-conquering cars.
When Wolff was asked if it’s possible that Newey would follow Verstappen to Mercedes, the Austrian confirmed this was indeed not outside the realm of possibility.

“Everything is always possible in this crazy carousel, I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Wolff told OE24.
“But we have an excellent team of technicians with whom I feel comfortable and 100 percent correctly positioned, even if the lap time doesn’t reflect that at the moment.”
When it was put to Toto that even Marko said the arrival of Verstappen, Newey and himself to Mercedes would be an “interesting variant”, Toto said:
“I’m just saying: if Horner stays, there are exciting scenarios. Ultimately it’s about Horner’s personality.
“But as I said, I only read what happens internally at Red Bull in the media,” he concluded.
