Valtteri Bottas says he had “quite an exhausting five years” at Mercedes, as “it was only in the last year that I could accept that Lewis Hamilton was a better driver”.

Valtteri Bottas joined Mercedes in 2017, and his goal was clear – he wanted to win his first Formula 1 world championship.

However, over the next five years the Finn was beaten to it by his team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

During his recent appearance on a Finnish talk show, Bottas said he ultimately had to accept that Lewis “was a better driver”.

“For such a competitive nature, it was hard to accept,” the Finn said.

“I always wondered how I could beat him and win the world championship. It was quite an exhausting five years.”

Ultimately, Valtteri says he should have been easier on himself.

“I wanted to win everything right away, and then when it didn’t happen, it was hard to accept,” he concluded.
