Former F1 driver Karun Chandhok says if Lewis Hamilton were to leave Formula 1 while questioning the sports’ integrity, “it’s quite hard to see how the FIA would recover from that very quickly”.
Lewis Hamilton’s future in Formula 1 is still debated in the media, after the Briton lost the 2021 championship due to race director Michael Masi ignoring the rules and protocols of the Safety Car at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has said that Lewis and the team are currently ‘disillusioned’ with Formula 1 because of the unjust decisions that have been made.
Former F1 driver and current Sky Sports commentator Karun Chandhok says it would be damaging for the sport’s reputation if Hamilton were to leave under these circumstances.
“Ultimately only he knows what’s going on in his head,” Chandhok said in a talk with Express UK.

“In my opinion, I think it would be very, very damaging for the sport if he walked away. Essentially he would be walking away because he didn’t think the sport was fair or credibly run.
“That would be extremely damaging for the reputation of the sport and the FIA. For the sake of the sport, I hope he doesn’t walk away at this point.
“Honestly, if that did happen, it’s quite hard to see how the FIA would recover from that very quickly, to be honest.
“It’s the sport’s biggest star basically questioning their integrity, so I hope that doesn’t happen,” he concluded.
