1996 Formula 1 champion Damon Hill says “it is admirable the way Lewis kept his chin up after what happened in Abu Dhabi”.

The controversy surrounding the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is well known. On that fateful day Lewis Hamilton was denied an almost certain eighth title victory, after race director Michael Masi made a series of unjust decisions, which went against the rules that govern the use of the Safety Car.

Despite the shock felt by every fan and supporter of Lewis and Mercedes, and even many observers of the sport, and despite his own shock at what happened, after the race Lewis got out of his car, congratulated title winners Max Verstappen and Red Bull, and participated in the podium ceremony.

1996 F1 champion Damon Hill is full of praise for how Lewis has continued to handle the aftermath of that fateful race to this day.

“It is admirable the way Lewis kept his chin up after what happened in Abu Dhabi,” Hill said.

“He got back on with the task in hand and he is driving better again this year than he has done before. He is starting to gel with that car now and he has solved some of the problems he faced.

“So I would be amazed if he doesn’t want to go out on a high by winning that eighth title, and he is absolutely motivated by that. He has got that longevity and he looks after himself.

“He needs a competitive car, half-a-chance, and someone like Lewis will rise up to that challenge and find more in himself.

“At the moment we are seeing a happier Hamilton, and a happy Hamilton is a fast Hamilton,” the Briton concluded.
