1996 F1 champion Damon Hill gives his thoughts on the news/rumour that Lewis Hamilton will be knighted in the New Year’s Honours list.
On Saturday British the Sun newspaper reported that Lewis Hamilton will be awarded knighthood by the Queen in the New Year’s Honours list. At this point we can’t confirm the news as fact, because it did not come from any official sources.
Hamilton’s countryman Damon Hill says the seven-time champion certainly deserves the honour.
“Lewis has always been breaking down barriers, the moment he arrived in F1 or even in karting he was breaking barriers and challenging the status quo,” Hill told the Guardian.
“The knighthood will be seen as recognition of not just his driving but also as a Black driver that has bust another door open for anyone who is not white.
“He has destroyed the preconception that it can’t be done, that there is an area where you cannot achieve something because of the colour of your skin. He has totally destroyed that notion.”

So far the only Formula 1 racers that have been awarded knighthood are Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jack Brabham and Sir Jackie Stewart.
“It is a very rare thing in our sport to get a knighthood. It is then also a recognition of his stance on equality, anti-racism and environmental issues. He is outspoken, he is playing his part and using his fame for positive purposes.
“He is a fantastic ambassador and having a knighthood will only increase his opportunities to do that work,” concluded Hill.
Recently, during an interview with BBC Breakfast, Hamilton gave his thoughts on the possibility of being knighted.
“Like everyone, I’ve grown up to respect the Royal Family,” said the Briton.
“If one day I am honoured to be up in front of the queen again, it will be the happiest day ever to see her again because she’s an icon, such an incredible individual.”
