George Russell reveals he believes Lewis Hamilton “should have won” the 2007 title, in a title-battle with team-mate Fernando Alonso.
Lewis Hamilton made his Formula 1 debut in 2007 at McLaren, driving alongside reigning two-time champion Fernando Alonso.
It was an intense title battle, which ended with both drivers finishing the season with the same number of points, while Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen managed to win the title.
Many believe it was McLaren’s internal politics that ultimately prevented both drivers from winning the title.
While talking about the possibility of driving alongside Max Verstappen, considering their previous public differences, George Russell said he would have no problem with it.

While giving examples of team-mates who didn’t necessarily like each other personally, George noted he believes Lewis should have won the title back in 2007.
“Life is short,” the Briton said.
“We’re all adults. We all learn from these experiences. You don’t need to be best mates as team-mates.
“[Ayrton] Senna and [Alain] Prost weren’t good friends, and they still finished one-two. Lewis [Hamilton] and Nico [Rosberg], one-two.
“Obviously, Lewis and Fernando [Alonso] is a notable exception. But Lewis should have won that year [2007].
“So yeah, Max is an incredible driver. There’s no denying that. But that’s why I would relish going up against him. We all believe we’re the best.”
Asked if he believes Verstappen would feel the same about their potential partnership, George said:
“I don’t see why he wouldn’t… I mean, it’s obviously more of a lose-lose situation for him. The same as when I was team-mates with Lewis.
“If he beat me, he was expected to. But if he lost to me, yeah, it’s seen as a big loss. Or the same with me and Kimi now.
“But I mean, we’re getting well ahead of ourselves here,” he concluded.
