George Russell says Mercedes believes they “can take the rear wing fully off and Red Bull would still be quicker than us on the straights”.
Red Bull’s huge advantage over other teams is evident during every race weekend so far in 2023. One of those advantages is straight line speed, especially compared to Mercedes.
Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, George Russell said Mercedes could even take their rear wing completely off, and Red Bull would still be quicker.
“We know what the speed differences [are],” the Briton said.
“We believe we can take the rear wing fully off and Red Bull would still be quicker than us on the straights and that’s not even a joke.”

George added that Mercedes was not sure what Red Bull was doing to achieve their speeds.
“So we don’t understand what they’re doing, they’re clearly doing something incredible, something very, very trick.
“Kudos to them for whatever they’ve done to achieve this straight line performance.
“But especially with the DRS, we believe we can take the real wing fully off and they’d still be quicker than us,” Russell concluded.
