In his first interview as an official Mercedes driver, George Russell says the team is fired up to “bounce back” from what happened in 2021.

In March George Russell will make his debut as a full-time Mercedes driver, but it’s far from his first experience with the team.

As a member of Mercedes’ junior driver programme, Russell already spent a lot of time with the team, even substituting for Lewis Hamilton at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix.

“It’s an incredibly special feeling to be an official Mercedes driver,” Russell said in his first official Mercedes interview.

“And a bit of a strange feeling at the same time, because having spent so much time there when I was in Formula 3 and Formula 2 as a junior driver.

“In a way it feels like returning home to people who I’ve known for such a long time, and get up to speed with how my team operates again, which is something I’ve really enjoyed.

“I feel like I know everybody’s so well already. So we were just straight to business on the important bits and bobs, to understand the new car to understand the challenges, and to try and prepare as best as possible for the season ahead.

“And I think following the conclusion of last year, there’s so much motivation and fire within the whole factory to bounce back.

“And that is incredible for me to see,” concluded the Briton.
