George Russell says Mercedes’ “race pace was really strong”, and adds he can “see no reason why we can’t fight for the double podium again”.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will start the Canadian Grand Prix from P3 and P4 respectively.
On Saturday Lewis actually qualified in P4 and George in P5, but after Nico Hulkenberg got handed a grid penalty, they each received a one place promotion.
After qualifying, George was pleased with his original result.
“P5 is a good starting position and I see no reason why we can’t fight for the double podium again,” he said.

“After practice, we probably would have taken P5 because we really struggled. When the track was dry we were more competitive and as it got wet we struggled.”
As for the race, the young Briton believes Mercedes can achieve a good result.
“Our race pace was really strong. Ferrari look surprisingly competitive in their long run pace, maybe question marks over their fuel load.
“We were just a small step behind Verstappen, ahead of Alonso and Perez at least yesterday in FP2 so signs are promising going into the race tomorrow,” Russell concluded.
