Lewis Hamilton says Red Bull’s sacking of Nyck de Vries after only 10 races was unfair. When asked if that’s how F1 works, he replied: “I’d say that’s how Red Bull works.”

Red Bull decided to replace Nyck De Vries at AlphaTauri after only 10 races, and bring in their reserve driver Daniel Ricciardo.

Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was asked if he was surprised to see Ricciardo returning so soon, after losing his seat in 2022.

“Well, not really because he’s been in every drivers’ briefing this year,” the Briton said.

“He’s in the drivers’ briefing but not actually competing. That’s very rare, you don’t often see the reserve driver in the drivers’ briefings. But I’m not surprised to see him back.”

However, Lewis did say he was surprised to see Red Bull replace De Vries so soon.

“I was definitely surprised to see the decision they took with poor Nyck. He’s such a talented young man and such a nice guy as well.

“So I think his future is still bright for him and he’ll have lots of great options, I’m sure.”

Asked if it was unfair to replace him after only 10 races, Lewis responded with: “Yep.”

After a pause, he added: “That’s how Red Bull do it.”
