Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko says his sources tell him James Vowles “took good engineers with him” to Williams, but he still believes “Mercedes will be our biggest challenger”.

It has been recently announced that Mercedes’ long-time strategy boss James Vowles will leave Mercedes to become Williams’ team principal, ahead of the 2023 season.

When asked if he fears this will turn Williams into Mercedes’ “B-Team”, Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko decided to stir the pot a little.

“No, I have completely different information,” the Austrian told SPORT1.

“Vowles went of his own accord and, so it is said, even took good engineers with him. My sources tell me that’s why the mood at Mercedes is tense.

Asked if this would be “weakening for Lewis Hamilton and Co.”, Marko said:

“We’ll see, but I still believe that Mercedes will be our biggest challenger when it comes to defending our title.”
