After awarding Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher the President’s Special Award, FIA President Jean Todt had words of praise for the two champions.

Not only did Lewis Hamilton receive his Drivers’ Championship trophy at the FIA Prize Giving Ceremony, but he was also awarded the FIA Personality of the Year Award and the President’s Special Award. The President’s Special Award was given to Hamilton and Michael Schumacher for “their shared achievement in winning seven titles, and the inspiration their sporting and personal commitments have brought to the world”.

Speaking at the event Hamilton talked about his achievements and his work with the Hamilton Commission, aimed at increasing diversity in motorsport.

“It’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to reach the milestone,” said Hamilton.

“I didn’t think in my wildest dreams I would stand here as a seven-time World Champion.

“The Hamilton Commission is about breaking down barriers and creating opportunity and opening up more doors for everyone.

“I’m really hopeful that, together with the FIA and Formula 1, we can move forward in this direction,” concluded the seven-time champion.

While explaining his choice to give the President’s Special Award to Hamilton and Schumacher, FIA President Jean Todt praised the two great champions.

“Michael and Lewis are champions but also incredible human beings,” said the Frenchman.

“Michael was always ready to support any kind of action to benefit society, for example his work on road safety.

“Let us not forget that, every year, 1.4million people die on the roads, so to have people like Michael and Lewis to engage with and educate young people is essential,” concluded Todt.
