Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes “had a great car on Friday”, but after Qualifying they realized that one of the power unit components “wasn’t correctly built”.
Lewis Hamilton had to start the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from the pit lane, after Mercedes decided to change his power on Saturday evening, while parc fermé conditions were in effect.
After the race he explained there was an issue with “one of the components”.
“We had a great car on Friday and made the tiniest of changes into Saturday,” the Briton said.
“One of the [power unit] components wasn’t correctly built, and then that led us the wrong way on Saturday.

“We didn’t find out [about the issue] until the end of the day.”
Lewis was set to finish outside of points, however, after Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez crashed near the end of the race, Lewis managed to finish in P9.
“I knew that we wouldn’t be able to overtake today. This is not one of those tracks. It’s difficult to follow in the middle, at least be close towards the end [of the lap].
“And yeah, I don’t know why our pace so bad on our side, but it happens,” Hamilton concluded.
