After losing out on pole by only 0.007s at the Portuguese Grand Prix Qualifying, Lewis Hamilton expects “a close battle” between himself, Valtteri Bottas and Max Verstappen.

Lewis Hamilton says his performance in the Portuguese Grand Prix qualifying was at the bottom of his all-time qualifying performances.

“There was honestly so much time available and I just didn’t put it together,” the Briton told Sky Sports.

“This qualifying session goes kind of at the bottom of my qualifying sessions over time.

“It was really tricky conditions here with the surface of the track and not a lot of grip, and the tyres, you need extra laps to get the temperature into them.

“One minute you have grip, the next minute you don’t and so it’s tricky for everyone.”

The seven-time champion says he expects a close battle in the race today.

“It’s gonna probably be a close battle between the three of us. I’ll try to get as close to Valtteri as I can off the start and go from there.”
