Lewis Hamilton says in Formula 1 engineers and designers are “being chased by other teams”, so they’re often “switching out”.

In the last 12 months a certain number of Mercedes’ staff has moved to other teams.

Last year Red Bull attracted some of the team’s engineers to their new Red Bull Powertrains engine factory, and most recently, Mercedes’ Motorsport Strategy Director James Vowles left the team to become the team principal of Williams.

In a talk with Mercedes’ partner UBS, Lewis Hamilton explained how it’s a normal occurrence in Formula 1.

“In my team there are 2000 people,” the Briton said.

“It is actually over 2000 people now to build two cars. They’re all switching out, it’s a bit like in the NFL for example.

“I was just at the Broncos game in LA, just learning more and more about the NFL, just how players are switched out so often through a season.

“It’s very, very similar for us with engineers and designers. They’re not being traded as such, but they’re being chased by other teams, you know.

“The other team wants out aerodynamicist or our tyre guy,” Hamilton concluded.
