Lewis Hamilton comments on Toto Wolff’s ‘please drive the car’ Austrian Grand Prix message, and says “Toto is an out-and-out racer who was just trying to encourage me”.

Over the course of the Austrian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton could be heard complaining to the team about the W14’s driveability.

“This car’s slow, mate,” Lewis said.

“I can’t keep it on the track, the car won’t turn,” he added.

This prompted Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff to come on the radio and say: “Lewis, the car is bad, we know, please drive it.”

Toto later explained he “wanted to make sure we were doing the best to get the most out of the package to make it perform and try to give it the best shot that we had”.

Ahead of the British Grand Prix, Lewis said he has thought about the situation, and will modify the way he talks over the team radio.

“The best thing about our partnership is that we are direct with each other,” he said.

“Toto is an out-and-out racer who was just trying to encourage me. That was his way of doing it. I have reviewed my comments, and where I was at mentally.

“I will adjust that in the future,” Hamilton concluded.
