Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes has “always known that the engine’s not the problem” and “anyone buying our engines knows what they are getting”.
After an unprecedented run of success, Mercedes has now been struggling with the performance of their cars for two and a half years in a row.
While it’s obvious that the team did not adapt well to F1’s 2022 regulation changes and its switch to more aero oriented ground-effect cars, some are suggesting that even Mercedes’ powerful engine is not as competitive as it once was.
However, after McLaren has proven that a Mercedes powered car can challenge even the dominant Red Bulls, Lewis Hamilton says the team always knew their engine is not the issue.
“We’ve always known that the engine’s not the problem,” the Briton said.
“The engine is great. The guys continue to do an amazing job in terms of developing that technology and in the hybrid era we have been right at the top in terms of our development rate, performance and reliability.

“So that hasn’t ever been an issue. So anyone buying our engines knows what they are getting.
“But we know on the car side we haven’t done the best of jobs in the last couple of years and we are working as hard as we can to rectify that.”
As for Lando Norris’ spectacular win at the Miami Grand Prix, Lewis said:
“It was really great to see Lando get that win and I’m sure there’s many to come.
“We’ll work as hard as we can that we’re there,” the Briton concluded.
