Lewis Hamilton is one of the five drivers who are testing new prototype gloves that have been developed by the FIA Safety Department.
Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel, McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, Williams’ George Russell and Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton are testing the new prototype gloves across the Turkish Grand Prix free practice sessions.
Since the beginning of 2021, the FIA Safety Department has been researching ways to improve the heat transmission protection of the drivers’ gloves. The aim is to increase the time gloves can be exposed to direct heat before the temperature becomes dangerous for the skin.

The research project was started after Romain Grosjean’s fiery crash at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix crash, that left lasting burns on his hands.
The FIA explains that the changes that increase protection “must be balanced with the levels of comfort and dexterity required to operate the car safely and for extended periods”. Therefore the FIA decided to test the new gloves during the Turkish Grand Prix free practice sessions.
The new gloves can be homologated only after they are approved by the World Motor Sport Council.
