Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes’ 2022 car will be modified and developed with input from both him and his new team-mate George Russell.

Mercedes is currently hard at work on developing its 2022 car, under the new Formula 1 rules. With George Russell set to become Lewis Hamilton’s team-mate next year, Lewis was asked if he, as a senior member of the team, was going to be the one driving the development of the new car.

“I think we rely on both of our inputs,” the Briton answered.

“At the end of the day, it is a car that will be built and designed around both of us. Obviously, we have a standing structure in how the car behaves and is something we have developed over time.

“George has driven that in the past and he will be a part of that development just as I am.”

Lewis adds his experience with Mercedes’ current car will definitely play a part in the development of the 2022 challenger, but once the car is in the hands of the drivers, they will both be influencing its further development.

“As I am driving the current car, I know where the weaknesses are and what I want in next year’s car and that is something I am working hard to make sure we have, that we will both benefit from.

“But as I said, once we get to the first test, the team will rely heavily on mine and George’s input,” concluded the seven-time champion.
