As he prepares for the imminent start of the 2021 Formula 1 season, Lewis Hamilton says it remains to be seen if he will “still have that smile” when he leaves the garage.

It 2021 Lewis Hamilton could win his eighth Formula 1 title, therefore surpassing Michael Schumacher and cementing his place as arguably the greatest of all time. However ahead of the 2021 season the Briton says this is not his main driving force.

“Of course it is the ultimate dream, but I don´t think necessarily it will be the deciding factor for if I stay on and keep going,” Hamilton explained.

“I think it is more when I put that helmet on, I still have that smile when I leave the garage.

“Will that be the case this year? We shall see. Will I enjoy it as much? We´ll see.”

As the most vocal proponent of equality and racial justice, Lewis Hamilton was at the forefront of Formula 1’s “We Race as One” campaign. And therein lies his main motivation for 2021.

“That´s my driving force this year. To make sure that we continue to push for accountability, and on top of that hopefully I can deliver good performances.

“But action is needed this year. We´ve got to make sure that we continue to have that conversation.”

With Red Bull emerging as the dominant force of pre-season testing, which was confirmed by Mercedes itself, Lewis is bracing for a hard championship fight.

“It’s going to be a long battle with them,” the Briton said.
