At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen got his 44th career victory, which is also Lewis Hamilton‘s racing number. Afterwards he said he hopes he doesn’t “stay on 44” because “that would be terrible”.

Max Verstappen got his 44th career win at the Hungarian Grand Prix, and immediately proceeded to ‘joke’ about the fact that it is also Lewis Hamilton’s long-time racing number.

“Hopefully I don’t stay on 44, that would be terrible,” Verstappen said.

“Yeah, I need to get 45 quickly,” he concluded.

Lewis has been racing with the number 44 for most of his career, and he at one point explained what it means to him.

“Everyone can use number one when they win the championship but it’s irrelevant for me,” the Briton said at the time.

“Forty four means more to me than number one. It doesn’t mean I’m not number one.

“The 44 is my family number. It’s the number I had when I first started racing. I won my first [karting] championship with 44. It means something to me.

“The number one itself, [Sebastian] Vettel’s had it, [Michael] Schumacher’s had it, all the champions have had it. None of them had 44.

“44 is mine,” Hamilton concluded.
