Max Verstappen again tries to defend his controversial 2021 title win by highlighting his performance “over the season”, adding that “the losing side will always complain”.

It seems Max Verstappen can’t have an interview without someone asking him about the controversy surrounding his 2021 Formula 1 title, which came after race director Michael Masi broke the rules that govern the use of the Safety Car.

In a talk with the Daily Mail, the Dutch driver once again explained why he ‘thinks’ he ‘deserves’ the title.

“I think I deserve to be world champion,” Verstappen said.

“A championship is won over the season, right? Not because of the last round. Some people just watch that race because of the tension that builds around it and think the outcome was wrong.

“But if you look at the year, the title was usually determined much earlier. It’s just that I got knocked out twice and had some bad luck with blowouts.

“With all those setbacks, it came down to the last race. And look at the statistics. Then you usually have an idea of how the season went.”

With this argument, Verstappen once again conveniently avoids talking about the finish of Abu Dhabi, instead opting to talk about his performance throughout the season, as if a championship can be awarded to the most ‘deserving’ driver.

The Dutchman was then asked if he feels sorry for Lewis Hamilton for the manner in which he lost the title.

“I can understand how Abu Dhabi played that he was upset and not happy about it, but like I said, you have to look at the championship in general.

“It was a crazy and epic season. I don’t care if people try to take the shine off. It does not matter.

“The losing side will always complain, but the winning side thinks otherwise.”

Verstappen was then asked if he has been in touch with Lewis over the winter.

“No. There is no reason to. We haven’t seen each other since just after the end of the race. It is fine.

“We are racers and we move on,” he concluded.
