Ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, Max Verstappen says he believes Mercedes made progress with their car, despite the W14‘s ‘modest’ showing in testing.
After 2023 Pre-Season Testing concluded, many observers and analysts said the Mercedes W14 was not looking like a 2023 championship contender.
However, ahead of the first race of the season – the Bahrain Grand Prix, Max Verstappen said he believes Mercedes made a bigger leap with their car than it seemed in testing – especially with their engine.
“At Mercedes, I think they found something again,” the Dutch driver said.

“Of course everybody [puts engine upgrades] under ‘reliability’, but there’s just more performance coming out of it, and we’re going to see.
“I definitely think they have made a step, maybe even a little more than us in terms of power. But in the end, most of it has to come from the car itself.
“Mercedes has also brought a different rear wing, so that will also be more efficient for them,” Verstappen concluded.
