After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen said he was “very happy” that Mercedes was competitive, but for a very selfish reason.
“No, it’s good that they are competitive because then they can steal more points off Ferrari,” the Dutch driver said.
“So I’m very happy. They’re doing very well.”
Verstappen also tried to play down Mercedes’ success ahead of the race, after George Russell claimed pole.

“I was surprised to see [Russell get pole. I mean, they were close, but I didn’t expect them to make that that jump in Q3, but it’s nice for me as well.”
Max then explained it’s “nice” for him because he expects Mercedes to help him in his battle with Ferrari.
“Well, they need to do me a favour – that’s more important,” the Dutch driver concluded.
