Mercedes Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin talks about Lewis Hamilton’s ability to take care of his tyres and his overtaking prowess.

At the Portuguese Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton once again showed he was the class of the field when he overtook both Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas to take the win.

One major factor that helped Lewis accomplish this feat, was his superb ability to take care of his tyres and make them last longer.

“His feel for the tires, I think is the key to how he manages to sit there and not overheat them and, and look after them,” Shovlin said after the race.

“He’s got the same tyres as everyone else, and you damage them by getting them hot by sliding them.

“So the key to it is just keeping them cool and managing the sliding, I think he’s just better at it than the others.”

Shovlin also praised Lewis’ overtaking ability.

“Lewis is very good at overtaking. He seems to know where to position the car, building up to it. He doesn’t keep trying lap after lap after lap.

“He’ll just sit there and then [he] takes the opportunity,” concluded Mercedes’ chief engineer.
