Mercedes High Performance Powertrains boss Hywel Thomas says the team is “putting into place some of the ideas we have had over the years” while building the new 2026 engine.

In 2026, new Formula 1 regulations will kick in, and this will include the introduction of a brand new power unit.

The last time this happened was in 2014, and Mercedes introduced what was at the time considered to be the best power unit on the grid, so expectations for the German team’s next engine are high.

Mercedes High Performance Powertrains Managing Director Hywel Thomas provides an update on its development.

“The regulations in the next couple of seasons deliberately restrict us, as more and more of the engineering and operational staff become part of the 2026 project,” Thomas said.

“It is an exciting time. We get these regulation changes every decade or so. There will be a lot of people who have never gone through this before.

“Similarly, there are those of us who have previous experience, so whichever way you look at it, these new regulations give everyone a boost.

“There’s a real chance to see what you can do from an engineering perspective. It is a wonderful period. It is hard work and there many setbacks as well as steps forward.

“But ultimately it is so energizing to be working on a new product, putting into place some of the ideas we have had over the years and seeing them come to fruition,” the Briton concluded.
