Mercedes says “teams will be all over” shots of Red Bull’s exposed floor

After Sergio Perez crashed out in Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying, his car was lifted into the air, exposing its floor and allowing photographers to take plenty of photos.

Sergio Perez crashed out early on in Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying, and while his Red Bull was being lifted off the circuit by crane, its floor was exposed for everybody to see.

The same thing happened to Mercedes earlier that day, when Lewis Hamilton crashed into the barrier in FP3.

Later, Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin said this situation will bother Red Bull more than his team.

“I suspect they’re probably more annoyed at their car being left in the sky than we would be about ours,” the Briton said.

Another interesting thing happened when Perez’s Red Bull was lifted – it stayed more level than the Mercedes. The W14 actually tipped towards its rear, which suggests different weight distribution.

However, Shovlin said this was not very significant.

“Years ago, when your weight distribution could be anywhere between 48% and 43%, you paid a bit more attention, you could try and work out where the centre of gravity was.

“These days, you’ve got a pretty narrow window to work in by the regulations anyway.”

The Briton then said other teams will be very interested in photos of Red Bull’s floor, as they will try to figure out what makes the RB19 so dominant.

“To be honest, with these regulations, the most important bit is the bit you don’t normally get to see. So, the teams will be all over those kinds of photographs.

“Monaco is a good opportunity to get that kind of shot,” Shovlin concluded.
