Nico Rosberg says it’s “strange” that Mercedes didn’t “poach” Red Bull staff

2016 F1 champion Nico Rosberg says the fact that Mercedes “haven’t been a little bit more active” to “try and get the talent from Red Bull” is “a little surprising”.

Red Bull has been dominating Formula 1 since the beginning of the 2022 season. While Aston Martin poached Red Bull’s former head of aerodynamics Dan Fallows that same year, and the team’s chief engineering officer Rob Marshall is set to leave for McLaren at the end of 2023, Mercedes doesn’t seem too keen on bringing in technical staff from the reigning world champions.

Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg thinks this is “strange”.

“I’ve heard that Dan Fallows has also been quadrupled in salary plus an equity stake in the team,” Rosberg said on Sky Sports.

“The teams are going for it to try and get the talent from Red Bull which is the normal way in F1. That’s what always happens.

“Mercedes – strange that they haven’t been a little bit more active there. The knowledge that you also get around a set of regulations when you take someone from the best team is just so valuable.

“Perhaps that’s a little surprising.”

Rosberg then added that the team is bound to learn from photos of Red Bull’s underbody, which emerged while Sergio Perez’s car was being removed via crane in Monaco.

“Then again, of course, they have incredible talent at Mercedes and now the pictures from Monaco help a lot because thanks to Sergio [Perez]’s crash.

“There are beautiful pictures of the underbody of the car which they can now take from those pictures and create a whole CAD model and do a whole accurate design in the computer of what that car is actually doing.

“That makes it very easy to start to really understand and learn about that Red Bull car,” Rosberg concluded.
